THE BIAS FREE FRAMEWORK
ABOUT THE FRAMEWORK
THEORY AND CONCEPTS

I realized that everything that I do whether work or anything in my life has value. That I should not look at a situation with a blind eye, that I should consider every expert especially when I am doing my research.
Prudy, Researcher
Medical Research Council, South Africa

BIAS FREE is an excellent framework in which to apply to organizations of every size. It is an eye- opener and is one of the only things I have learnt, is value-free.
Juanita Chewparsad, Scientist
Medical Research Council, South Africa

The workshop has been a learning experience. Issues that I had been vaguely aware of has been clearly defined, and now I have a better understanding of how I can go about approaching the issues I have or may have problems with in the future.
Celeste, Researcher
Medical Research Council, South Africa

The workshop was extremely interesting & eye-opening to a BIAS FREE approach to research...I have learnt a lot, I have been challenged with a new way of BIAS FREE thinking, and applications to my studies, work & life. Thank You for an amazing journey with this workshop. You have shed light on many grey areas.
Melisha Sukkh, Researcher
Medical Research Council, South Africa

This is an amazing tool. It would be great if others, more people are aware of this Framework. We would have so many more happy people at work & therefore their personal lives.
Liezel Smith, Researcher
Medical Research Council, South Africa

It changed the way I view the way research projects are conducted and how we perpetuates injustices in our communities.
Tandeka Magaerbeba, Researcher
Medical Research Council, South Africa

I found the comprehensive nature and potential for wide application to be very compelling. I have been sensitized to how pervasive non-inclusive/bias laden language & assumptions are in research tools.
Connie, Researcher
Medical Research Council, South Africa

The BIAS FREE Framework is useful to help people understand complex human issues, and makes them clear.
Vincent Horner, Researcher
Medical Research Council, South Africa

I think the BIAS FREE Framework provides one of the most inclusive models of conducting research which goes beyond the traditional ethical considerations for researchers.
Sibasaso Sifuner, Scientist
Medical Research Council, South Africa

Excellent workshop, challenging, thought provoking, stimulating in that it motivated me to want to explore more beliefs that are generally accepted as true, and yet they have a bias.
Lorraine, Researcher
Medical Research Council, South Africa

This workshop is excellent. It should be given to all employees.
Moloko, Researcher
Medical Research Council, South Africa

The analytical thinker in me has been unleashed!
Kedi Aphone, Researcher

It is a simple tool that can produce profound results in transforming behaviour.
Malik Vazi, Researcher
Medical Research Council, South Africa

The Framework is an innovative and practical tool which can be used to challenge existing hierarchies in a way that goes beyond the "hunch" to provide evidence that is persuasive.
Amanda Mason-Jones
Medical Research Council, South Africa

The BIAS FREE Framework is useful and can be applied effectively to eliminate hierarchy in the workplace. This would give fair share in terms of research being done...For me it was a learning curve and an eye opener in terms of seeing the “BIASness” in research. If applied in all structures of the South African government that's when we will, the people of South Africa, be living in a Democratic society.
Anonymous, Researcher
Medical Research Council, South Africa

Once I started to understand the Framework I found it very interesting and realized how many situations (work, personal life, studies) it could be applied to. Helped me to identify "biases" and hierarchies, where I would have never seen them before. Applying it to situations in the MRC structure helped to reinforce the ideas and realize just how useful it can be.
Ronel Sewpau, Researcher
Medical Research Council, South Africa

I came to the workshop not knowing anything about the concept and the application of the BIAS FREE Framework but as for now, I can confidently say that I can be able to use the concepts and Principle of the BIAS FREE Framework to ethically analyse research work for any missing gaps, whether in writing or at the analysis stages.
Mzwandiw Mbngwana, Researcher
Medical Research Council, South Africa

The Framework challenged me to think of my own biases and how to work towards eliminating them before focusing on others.
Itumeleng Funani, Scientist
Medical Research Council, South Africa

The entire workshop was an eye opener to things that are biased and yet I thought it acceptable and that taught me I’ve a role to play in addressing those biases...It was a great interaction workshop that allowed us to see each other differently, not so senior and junior staff but as a unit, a family. It enhanced the idea of working together, explored how to critique articles and gave the skill on how to strive for change for growth and development
Nwabias Xwayii, Researcher
Medical Research Council, South Africa

I realized that the framework is applicable in all areas of life.
Rohot, Researcher
Medical Research Council, South Africa

I am reminded of what a high school teacher used to tell us all the time, "In the class are children who take a little bit longer to understand and those that grasp concepts quicker, I love all of you the same." In short BIAS FREE is attempting to do just that, eliminate problematic differences.
Thabang Manyaapelo, Researcher
Medical Research Council, South Africa

This Framework opened my eyes. It is a very good Framework that needs to be applied in all areas e.g. Home, work...This has been a great experience as I can now read newspapers, articles or magazines using the BIAS FREE Framework. It also filled the gap when we were doing the roles between juniors and seniors. In the beginning of the workshop I didn’t even know what the meaning of “hierarchy” was but I am very happy to say that my vocabulary has been enriched. If this Framework could be applied at schools in South Africa it will be great as there are a lot of problems there too.
Nombasa Hiekaw, Researcher
Medical Research Council, South Africa

Enriching, Enlightening and Enjoyable! I never realized that even though I am a woman myself - I could be so biased towards other women! The BIAS FREE framework opened my eyes and thoughts to be more balanced and neutral in my thinking and approach to health research.
Roderika Shrivastar, Researcher
IDRC Research on International Tobacco Control

It was a wonderful experience and eye opener to gender analysis and using the BIAS FREE Framework in particular. I would recommend it for use in institutional review boards.

I have found the BIAS FREE Framework a wonderful working tool that can help people working on social issues to be able to see many of the things that go un-noticed mostly unconsciously. It helps for inclusiveness and sensitivity in all aspects and dimensions...it will change attitudes and practices in a new direction.
Mussie Habte Ghebretinsae, Researcher from Eritrea
IDRC Research on International Tobacco Control

I expect my research skills to improve by applying this Framework. My research will be a better reflection of reality by it.
Carlos Ernesto Viteri-Yaquan, Researcher

While we are aware of the limitations or potential biases in any research design or program, the concepts give meaning, depth, and title to it.
Asma Bazzi, Researcher from Pakistan

Ghiday Ghebreyohannes

I need to review work that I have looked at. I am sure almost all would not pass my upgraded criteria now. Even though I cannot change what I have done now; am sure my future work would be a reflection of this Framework.
Peter Magati, Researcher
IDRC Research on International Tobacco Control

Eye-opening and instructive experience. Would be beneficial not only to specific organizations but society as a whole... BIAS FREE isn't just a tool, it is a way of life, and I now feel I can go out and use it to transform the world in a positive way.

The BIAS FREE Framework is an exceptional tool that decisions makers at all levels ought to use in their day-to-day work...I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and especially working with the other participants in exploring examples of biases in their personal and professional experiences, as well as the interactive activities.

Prior to attending the Workshop I thought I had a clear understanding of the concept of bias. This Workshop gave the opportunity to build on previous knowledge, as well as the opportunity to explore issues and topics I never knew existed. I highly recommend this Workshop to people of all ages, professions, and academic backgrounds.
SepTahari, Project Lead

I attended both Introductory Workshop as well as Training of Trainers Workshop. The facilitators took real care to help us to understand the concepts and Framework clearly. The Workshops convinced me that BIAS FREE Framework is an effective tool to challenge and reduce oppressive hierarchies.
